Jon Stewart of the Daily show is a great
comedian and showman. He deftly handled
the Oscar hosting job this year. But he won
my heart and undying support with one
simple act of kindness on Sunday night
February 25th.
After the Best Song was announced "Falling
Slowly" from the movie ‘Often,’ songwriters
Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova came
up to receive their Oscars. In his excitement
and elation, Hansard pretty much hogged
the microphone with his acceptance speech.
When Irglova started to speak the mic was
abruptly cut off and the orchestra filled the
air before the show cut to commercial.
When the show returned from commercial,
Stewart walked out to the podium and told
the crowd Marketa Irglova didn’t get the
opportunity to speak, so he invited her
back out to the podium to speak telling
her to “Enjoy her moment.”
Her heart felt words were the ultimate
highlight of the entire awards show and
would have been completely lost, if not for
the class and kindness of Jon Stewart.
Kudos big guy – You are a class act!

It is unfortunate that more people did not watch this
years Academy Awards. Yes, it is a lengthy industry
show, but every so often, you get to see a truly magic
moment. This years Oscars had that moment.
Mid-way, after listening to way too many tedious songs
nominated for Best Song, I will freely admit, I briefly
nodded off. But what woke me up was a beautiful
gentle song entitled “Falling Slowly” from the indie
film entitled ‘Often’ sung by Glen Hansard and
Marketa Irglova. I have not seen the movie or
heard the song, but I was impressed with its
tenderness and its simplicity. Watching Hansard
sing, I could only think, either this guy is really
attached to his guitar or he’s totally broke.
Knowing the Academy, I figured this song doesn’t
have a chance next to the overproduced standard
entry from Disney. Needless to say, I was very happy
when it was announced that Falling Slowly had won.
It was a touching moment to watch Hansard accept
his Oscar ending his lengthy speech with an exuberant
proclamation “Make Art, Make Art.”
But the really magical moment was almost lost when
Marketa Irglova wasn’t allowed to speak due to time
constraints. Fortunately, Jon Stewart righted a wrong
and called her back out to the podium telling her to
“Enjoy your moment.” Thankfully, Irglova’s moment
became ours:
“Thank you very much. This is such a big deal, not
only for us, but, for all other independent musicians
and artists that spend most of their time struggling.
The fact that we’re standing here tonight. The fact
that we’re able to hold this is, just, to prove that no
matter how far-out your dreams are - it’s
possible and you know, fair play to those who
dare to dream and don’t give up. The song was
written from the perspective of hope. And hope, at
the end of the day connects us all, no matter how
different we are. So thank you so much who helped
us along the way.”
In my opinion, Irglova was the true star of the Oscars.
She spoke to every heart who ever dared to dream.
In that eloquent moment, Irglova spoke for the indie
community; Artists who pour their heart and soul into
their music. All they ask for is a fair chance to be
heard.
